Medical Marijuana offers wealth of benefits for those with chronic illness

Turn to nearly any news outlet and you’re almost guaranteed to see a story about another state grappling with whether or not to legalize medical marijuana for men and women with specific health needs. The reason these debates are happening at all is because, like it or not, marijuana offers real medical benefits for the treatment of a wide variety of medical conditions, in some cases alleviating symptoms and in others, slowing the progression of specific diseases.

Here’s just a sample of its benefits:

Alleviating Pain

For years, clinicians have hailed the use of medical marijuana for the treatment of chronic pain. Just this month, the National Pain Foundation released results of a survey that found medical marijuana is significantly more effective at treating fibromyalgia pain than the three FDA-approved drugs used to treat the condition. Marijuana has also been shown to be effective in the treatment of migraines.

Controlling Muscle Spasms

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society reports that multiple studies have shown medical marijuana can reduce spasticity, pain and muscle stiffness in MS patients.

Reducing Anxiety

Researchers at Vanderbilt University found that in small doses, marijuana can help alleviate anxiety, and some clinicians use medical marijuana to successfully treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), which they say has far fewer side effects than Ritalin, the primary drug used for ADHD treatment.

Slows the Spread of Some Cancers

Last fall, a study from the United Kingdom found that compounds found in marijuana can destroy cancer cells in patients with leukemia, which kills about 24,000 people each year in the U.S.

And that’s not all. Recent studies have considered cannabis for the treatment of many other conditions and diseases, including:

  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
  • Diabetes Mellitus
  • Dystonia
  • Epilepsy
  • Gastrointestinal Disorders
  • Hepatitis C
  • Huntington’s Disease
  • Hypertension
  • Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA)
  • Osteoporosis
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Sleep Apnea
  • Tourette’s Syndrome

Critically, another study published in the journal Substance Abuse, Treatment, Prevention and Policy revealed that, of nearly 500 study participants, those who smoked pot every day of the week had the same levels of motivation as those who never smoked pot. Why is that critical? Because many people who oppose legal medical marijuana do so because they believe the drug saps users of their drive and ambition.

The truth is, no matter which side of the debate you’re on, there’s no getting away from the fact that marijuana does offer significant medical benefits to many patients suffering from often debilitating medical conditions.
